Comments about Gander Mountain Spinning Reel:

I got this for my girlfriend as her first reel and it's been very good for her (paired with an Ugly Stik- great match!). So far it seems great for the price, but when I bought it I was disappointed to find that GM no longer makes the Guide Series Competitor (I own four and have used them for six or seven years with no major issues). One very nice feature is the exta spool, which makes it easy to target different species without buying a second outfit. I load 12# mono on one spool for bass and catfish and 6# on the other for trout and panfish. The one real drawback i see with this reel is slightly flimsy construction of the handle. My other gripe is that it doesn't look as good as the Competitor series or the other Guide Series reels, but that's a minor issue. I would definitely recommend this to first-time anglers, but it remains to be seen if it will hold up like the Competitors have.
