    Is that white piece to the right attached to the transom and connected to the speedometer by the cable? Or is therer some other electrical/motor connection?

      Its called the Pitot tube and yes it attaches to the transom and the hose then attaches to that and the speedo and your done. No motor connections and the only electrical would be if its illuminated or not.

      The white piece is the pick-up. It mounts on the transom sticking down below the bottom of the boat and the black hose attatches to it and to the back of the speedometer. As the boat moves, water goes into a small hole in the pick-up and creates air presure in the black hose. The air presure makes the neddle move. The faster you go the more preasure you create and that make the neddle move higher.
