Q:
This may be a dumb question but how do I know if I have a 20 pole alternator or not? I am looking to replace my Tach that has malfuntioned with the Teleflex Eclipse Tachometer.I noticed the answer to someone elses question that this tach will not work with a 20 pole alternator. The boat is a 1987 Seaswirl with a 5.0 ford engine.Asked on 8/9/2012 by Warren from Clovis, CA.1 answer
A:
On the back of your existing tachometer there is a dial that has to be set ot the right setting according to the pole of the alternator. If you have a 20 pole alternator that dial would either be set to 10 or 20. If it is set to any other number you do not have a 20 pole alternator. Usually only Force outboards run on 20 pole alternators.Answered on 11/13/2012 by Justin M. from Overton's

These are universal gauges and as long as you are not operating a boat that has a 20 poll alternator, it will work for you.Answered on 12/17/2009 by Bryant from Tech

A:
Yes it will. Teleflex tachometers will not work on 20 pole alternators like U.S. Marine and Force engines. Those are the only ones it will not work with.Answered on 9/21/2009 by JUSTIN from OVERTONS TECHNICIAN
Q:
Specs say 3" diameter requiring a 3.44" hole. Am I reading something wrong? I'm looking for a small dia tach for pontoon boat.
Thanks
MikeAsked on 6/22/2009 by Anonymous1 answer
A:
no you are not reading it wrong. The actual viewing bezel is 3 in. the black rubber or plastic ring goes in the 3.44 hole and then the 3.0 in tach goes in the rubber ring to create a tight seal. that is good enough explanation good luckAnswered on 7/20/2009 by Frank from New Bern NC
Q:
Can I use this tachometer with a outboard motor?
Do all the gauges come with the nessary hard ware, fittings etc?Asked on 5/21/2009 by Anonymous1 answer
A:
This tachometer is great to use on an outboard motor as well as an inboard/outdrive motor as long as your motor does not use a 20 pole alternator. 20 pole alternators are commonly seen on Force outboards, and in the case where a 20 pole alternator is present this tachometer will not work.Answered on 1/27/2011 by Justin from Overton's
