Love the compact size and concealability of this weapon, the recoil is surprisingly minor compared to cailbre. Little tight with regards to feed due to newness will be fantastic once broken in, just bought a case of ammo.

I bought this hand gun a few weeks ago but due to my schedule and vacation was not able to go to the range. Finally went to the the outdoor range today with a few friends. I am a HUGE fan of Springfield Armory and own the XD 45acp as well and cannot rave enough about the quality of these pistols.
I have read all the reviews about this gun both professional articles and comments on forums from numerous sites. The most common complaint seems to be the FTF and FTE which if enough research is done can be attributed to weak grip. I had no such issues with this pistol.
I fired Winchester 230gr FMJ, Tulammo 230gr FMJ (if it can fire this cheap stuff without issue it can fire anything) and Hornady Critical Defense HP 230gr...all told about 200 rounds. No problems, not one.
The recoil, in my honest opinion, is not much different than my XD 45acp. Listen, this is a 45acp in a 3inch barrel...I hate saying it, but it is not going to be comfortable for everyone. I tried limp wristing this pistol to try to produce a failure and could not. My friends who watched me could not believe the groupings at 7yds and 10yds consistently around 4in to as little as two inches (maybe once or twice, probably luck) and this is the first time firing it. This pistol is not just accurate...it is scary accurate. You have to adjust when double tapping because unlike a 9mm it will take a split second more to fire off a second round due to recoil but I had no problem zeroing in on target and hitting center mass...with a 45acp HP in a defensive position a shot or two to the chest is game over, end of confrontation.
After shooting my hand felt fine and my forearm is not sore. I also go to the gym about 5 times a week and would consider myself to be in pretty good shape for a 35yo-40yo male if that makes any difference in grip strength. I will say this, when I bought it I took it apart and cleaned it well and oiled it...then it sat for a few weeks so this morning before the range put a little more oil on the barrel and slides. I am a big believer that your gun needs to be treated and cared for and it will do the same for you.
I absolutely love this gun and cannot stop gushing over it. It is everything I hoped it would be and more. For those of you on the fence about this pistol go ahead and take the plunge you will not regret this purchase. This pistol is a machine and Springfield has changed the game of concealed 45acp. Powerful, manageable and most importantly reliable...that IS the XDS.

I rented an XDS at a local range and immediately after I went to Gander and ordered it - loved shooting it. I was amazed by how manageable the recoil really was. I also own a S&W Shield 9mm and the two are virtually identical in size. I was expecting this with twice the bullet grain compared to the Shield to be a beast on the hands but it wasn't.

Once I received mine I went to the range and it shot completely different than the one I rented in terms of sights. With the one I rented I had groupings of a few inches at about 10 yards, with the one I purchased I was all over the place but all were about 6" low. I adjusted my grip, stance, and view through the sights to counter and it did improve but still low. My brother shot it also (he commonly shoots 1911's so you know his baseline) and it shot low for him too but not as low as me. I tried different brands of quality ammo and all results were the same. I have read many reviews about shooting low and Springfield will adjust so I am going to try it a few more times before deciding to send it in or not. Overall love it and expected to take a little time getting familiar with it - I believe it will turn out to be one of my favorites.

In direct comparison to the Shield for those of you wondering: size is virtually identical, not much more recoil compared to the Shield, and I like the grip much better on the XDS - it is aggressive and I feel like I have a much better hold of it compared to the Shield which has much more of a smooth grip. Don't get me wrong I still love my Shield!
