A furthering of the Krag-Jorgensen-designed Model 1892, the M1896 Springfield was one of a series of rifles that served as the standard US Army longarm until they were replaced by Springfield's new M1903. The Model 1896 magazine cut-off operates in a down position and the cleaning rod is moved to butt trap. An improved rear sight and tighter production tolerances gave better accuracy than earlier Krag rifles and the stock was made slightly thicker. This rifle features an engraved buttstock, a Lyman fixed front sight, a Marble's adjustable buckhorn rear sight, and a 3-position safety. Its wood, metal, and bore are all in very good condition.
