Comments about Shakespeare® Ugly Stik® Microcast Combo:
My son turns 5 this summer and he has been asking me to take him fishing. I haven't fished for 20 years, but I was eager to get back into the sport. I checked out the "licensed" kids fishing sets and was leery of the quality. Yes, the cartoon characters and light up handles appeal to kids, but I would be surprised if they lasted more than a few outings. I asked a Gander Mountain employee what he would suggest, and he recommended this combo. For a few more bucks than you'd spend on a kid's toy rod and reel, you can get the perfect first fishing combo that the kids can use for years, and Dad can use should the kids lose interest. The Microcast combo comes with a genuine 4'8" ultra-light Ugly Stick rod and a very decent spincasting reel, loaded with 4lb test line.
I brought this combo home and introduced it to my son. (Still 4 years old, mind you.) I tied a small washer to the line and had him practice a few casts. Within minutes, he was casting very well. He begged me to go fishing that day, so we headed out, picked up some worms and went to the local Metroparks pond. With a simple bobber, split shot and hook, my son was landing bluegill in no time. We had a blast, and he continued to fish for 4 hours that day. The ultra-light rod is great for bluegill and the like, very sensitive, but strong enough to handle the bumps and "oopses" that come with fishing with kids. The reel performed perfectly--no tangles, and the drag setting is easy to adjust. My son had no trouble working the release button.
The beauty of this combo is that if your child should lose interest in fishing, Mom or Dad could use it for panfishing without embarrassment. The rod has a 7 year warranty, and the reel has a 1 year warranty. You won't get that with the kiddie reels.
If you're thinking about taking your young son or daughter out fishing, this is a great starter set that should last a very long time.

Comments about Shakespeare® Ugly Stik® Microcast Combo:
THIS IS THE BEST MICO SPIN SET UP I HAVE OWNED. I BOUGHT IT FOR MY WIFE FOR TROUT, BASS AND CRAPPIE AND SHE LOVES IT. THE UGLY STICK IS A PLEASURE FOR THE SIZE OF FISH WE CATCH, 1-5 LBS AND THE SHAKESPEARE REEL IS VERY COMPACT, LITE WT, VERY EASY TO USE AND CASTS BEAUTIFULLY. I PLAN ON ORDERING ONE FOR MYSELF.

We're still on our fist season of use, but the line seems like good quality to me. No issues so far, and it's plenty strong for the bluegills we're catching with the combo.Answered on 4/15/2010 by Greg from Northeast Ohio, USAVERIFIED BUYER
