Comments about Savage Arms Savage Model 93R17 FXP Rimfire Rifle:
The scope is a Bushnell Sharpshooter. Zeroed in 5 shots. 17 grain, 5 shots within an inch at 50yds. 20 grain not as good, but very accurate. Did this with a 10 to 15mph headwind. Given the lite bullets, it'll be more accurate on a calm day. This rifle is more accurate than my Remington Speedmaster. I have a new favorite rimfire.
Only drawback is the 5 round magazine. After running about 20 rounds through the clip, it lost shape at the top and all the bullets ejected upon opening the bolt. I like to hand feed one at a time from the bench, so it's no big deal for me. Fortunately you can buy Savage replacements.
Can't wait to try it out at 100 yds.

Q:
how about a fox... would it have the killing power at about 100 to 200 yards for a fox... i know i have killed a fox at about 20 yards with a pelet gun to the head but how about further with the same size bullet...Asked on 1/24/2010 by Anonymous2 answers
A:
Yes, .17 HMR will kill a fox out to about 200 yards. Beyond that the bullet tends to drift in the wind. I have taken prarie dogs at 225 yards(on a calm day) and they literally blow in half. I wouldn't shoot anything bigger than a fox with this caliber but I think it would be perfect. If you want a bit more killing power at range look at 22-250. It's more expensive but packs a mean punch.Answered on 4/20/2010 by sage from Rio Rancho, NMA:
The 17HMR is an outstanding little gun... Its very accurate at 100 and 200 yrd shots. I originally bought my 17 for fox and if your a good shot you should have no problems. Try using 17 grain vmax Hornady shells. they will cripple any fox or groundhog at 200 yrdsAnswered on 3/2/2012 by marksman from york pa

hornady magnum rimfireAnswered on 12/20/2009 by dan from paA:
It means .17 caliber HORNADY MAGNUM RIFLE. It is a small projectile 0.17 inches in diameter that is driven by a huge smokeless powder charge for it's size. The projectile is the same diameter as an airgun pellet and weighs either 17 grains or 20 grains. It has some very dynamic features like going about 2550 feet per second(fps) when it leaves the barrel. The projectile is also spinning over 100,000 rpm when it is fired. It goes about a mile in 2 seconds. It is the fastest rimfire cartridge on the market today. I am told all .17 HMR ammo comes from the same plant in Idaho. The different ammunition suppliers just have different bullets and powder charges that give their products special features. The cartridges with the hollow points tend to blow up or explode on contact while the polymer tipped rounds penetrate futher. The rimfire version of the .17 HMR came on the market in 2002.I hope this helps.Answered on 1/7/2010 by BIGDAVE 1954 from Columbia,SC
Q:
is this a deer rifle?Asked on 11/22/2009 by kfc from wv1 answer
A:
NO it isn't. You can't legally hunt deer with a rimfire rifle in my homestate anyways(Texas.) You may talk to a game warden or a policeman who can tell you how to contact the game wardens office to see. It may be legal in other states, but down here were I'm at we use big guns. Honestly, 9 times out of 10, unless your a great shot you will wound a deer rather than killing it with a .17 HMR. If your looking to kill a Deer my favorite caliber rifle would have to be a .308. That is my personal preference, however I have successfully bagged deer with other size guns like.30-06, .270,&.30-.30. Good luck man!!!Answered on 11/25/2009 by Hick from the Stix from Lubbock, TX
Q:
is it a good deer gunAsked on 11/16/2009 by Anonymous2 answers
A:
In many states it is illegal to hunt deer with rimfire rifles. It can definitely be done, but you have to be able to pull off clean head shots, and be faster than the green man. Wouldn't reccomend it.Answered on 1/2/2013 by Johnny Rabbit from Southeast, TXA:
No this is definately NOT A DEER RIFLE. It does not have enough knock down power or penetation to humanely hunt deer. That does not mean that a person could never kill a deer with this rifle. It does mean that most likely a deer would just sustain a wound and walk around in pain for days in agony before finally dieing from an infection or some other cause. I would stick with at least a 30x30 cartridge to hunt deer or a shotgun slug in 12 or 20 gauge size. I like to use the .17 HMR to target shoot or shoot varmints. This is the thing this rifle does best. It makes a nice squirrel rifle and does great shooting rats, prarie dogs, and rabbits. In all states that I know of it is illegal to use a round this small to hunt deer.Answered on 1/7/2010 by BIGDAVE1954 from COLUMBIA,SC
Q:
I NEED TO GET A VARMINT GUN. FRIENDS SUGGESTED A .22 OR A 17. I KNOW NOTHING ABOUT GUNS. IS THIS SIMILAR TO THE .22 RIFLE? IF SO, IS IT A BIT BETTER TO USE. I WOULD USE IT ON GROUND HOGS, ETC. ON MY LAND. THANKS.Asked on 11/9/2009 by BL from WARWICK,NY2 answers
A:
Yes this gun would be perfect. 17 calibers have proven to be more accurate and have more of a range then a .22. This weapon would be ideal for any small varmint. It has a heavy target barrel which makes it even more accurate. Even with the heavy target barrel it still weighs in at around 6 pounds thats about perfect weight.Answered on 11/14/2009 by Froggy from Lisbon, NDA:
I agree with Froggy. The .17 HMR is a great varmint rifle. It fires with a very flat trajectory and in my opinion is more accurate than a 22 long rifle. It does not ricochet or bounce around off rocks and solid objects as bad as a .22. The only down side to this round is that the wind tends to effect it easily when it gets over 10 mph or so. The wind effects the .22 round too. Most people I know have fallen in love with their.17 cals and put the .22s back in the gun cabinet or safes when they start firing a .17 cal...they do a great job on ground hogs, prarie dogs and all varmints up to a cayote. I have heard of some shooting cayotes with them. I would practice a lot before I went to an animal that big with them.Answered on 1/7/2010 by BIGDAVE1954 from COLUMBIA,SC
