The 17HMR is an outstanding little gun... Its very accurate at 100 and 200 yrd shots. I originally bought my 17 for fox and if your a good shot you should have no problems. Try using 17 grain vmax Hornady shells. they will cripple any fox or groundhog at 200 yrds

It means .17 caliber HORNADY MAGNUM RIFLE. It is a small projectile 0.17 inches in diameter that is driven by a huge smokeless powder charge for it's size. The projectile is the same diameter as an airgun pellet and weighs either 17 grains or 20 grains. It has some very dynamic features like going about 2550 feet per second(fps) when it leaves the barrel. The projectile is also spinning over 100,000 rpm when it is fired. It goes about a mile in 2 seconds. It is the fastest rimfire cartridge on the market today. I am told all .17 HMR ammo comes from the same plant in Idaho. The different ammunition suppliers just have different bullets and powder charges that give their products special features. The cartridges with the hollow points tend to blow up or explode on contact while the polymer tipped rounds penetrate futher. The rimfire version of the .17 HMR came on the market in 2002.I hope this helps.

NO it isn't. You can't legally hunt deer with a rimfire rifle in my homestate anyways(Texas.) You may talk to a game warden or a policeman who can tell you how to contact the game wardens office to see. It may be legal in other states, but down here were I'm at we use big guns. Honestly, 9 times out of 10, unless your a great shot you will wound a deer rather than killing it with a .17 HMR. If your looking to kill a Deer my favorite caliber rifle would have to be a .308. That is my personal preference, however I have successfully bagged deer with other size guns like.30-06, .270,&.30-.30. Good luck man!!!

No this is definately NOT A DEER RIFLE. It does not have enough knock down power or penetation to humanely hunt deer. That does not mean that a person could never kill a deer with this rifle. It does mean that most likely a deer would just sustain a wound and walk around in pain for days in agony before finally dieing from an infection or some other cause. I would stick with at least a 30x30 cartridge to hunt deer or a shotgun slug in 12 or 20 gauge size. I like to use the .17 HMR to target shoot or shoot varmints. This is the thing this rifle does best. It makes a nice squirrel rifle and does great shooting rats,prarie dogs,and rabbits. In all states that I know of it is illegal to use a round this small to hunt deer.

I agree with Froggy. The .17 HMR is a great varmint rifle. It fires with a very flat trajectory and in my opinion is more accurate than a 22 long rifle. It does not ricochet or bounce around off rocks and solid objects as bad as a .22. The only down side to this round is that the wind tends to effect it easily when it gets over 10 mph or so. The wind effects the .22 round too. Most people I know have fallen in love with their.17 cals and put the .22s back in the gun cabinet or safes when they start firing a .17 cal...they do a great job on ground hogs,prarie dogs and all varmints up to a cayote. I have heard of some shooting cayotes with them. I would practice a lot before I went to an animal that big with them.
