Product Description
remington This All-American pump gun brings hunters the best of all worlds. Beneath no-nonsense, ready-for-work exterior of the Model 870 Express lies the same quality, precision, and dependability that you'll find in Remington's legendary Model 870 Wingmaster, but at a much more affordable price. Like all Model 870 shotguns, this workhorse features a receiver milled from a solid billet of steel for maximum strength and reliability. The silky-smooth twin action bars prevent binding and twisting so that you'll always have the chance to get off a second shot. Appropriately dressed for the hunt and not for the wall, each shotgun sports non-reflective black matte metalwork and either a wood stock and fore-end or black synthetic stock and fore-end. Both the 12- and 20-gauge models are offered with your choice of a 26- or 28-inch vent-rib barrel with a Modified Rem Choke and single bead sight.

Its solid, dependable action makes it America's favorite, and our continual upgrades make it the most advanced, well-rounded family of pump shotguns around. Along with continually evolving designs, this shotgun's superiority is a matter of rugged dependability, great pointing characteristics and versatility. In fact, the Model 870 has been the standard for slide-action performance for almost 60 years.

My first and only shotgun all these years has been an atrocious quality Weatherby model 92 pump gun that from day one would randomly double feed shells, jamming the gun and necessitating the barrel be removed to clear.
I struggled for decades with that annoyance, but last year, the extractor broke for no reason, so I gave up and sold the battered old Weatherby to put towards a REAL shotgun, the venerable Remington 870.
Yes, we all probably would buy a Wingmaster if we had our druthers, but the price for one is just too high for most of us who prefer to use our shotguns rather than show them off, hence the Express I opted for here.
The main differences between the Wingmaster and the Express are that the (wood stock) Express has a laminated plain finish stock with pressed checkering, a parkerized finish, a solid rubber recoil pad, and a plastic trigger guard.
Other than that, it is essentially the same shotgun, just plainer and (presumably) with a lesser degree of care in fit and finish.
But it performs very well at the range.
In fact, I've already put well over 100 shells through it without a single failure or jam, and I busted pigeons with ease, quite a bit of fun.
The only thing I noticed that annoyed me at all was that the forend tends to rub along the barrel on the left side when the barrel heats up, slightly abrading the wood along the slightly textured parkerization on that side of the barrel.
I would be very put off by that with the much more expensive Wingmaster, but this doesn't seem to affect operation at all.
Unlike that hated Weatherby, this Remington has worked perfectly from the very beginning.

The gun could not be initially assembled as the bolt was stuck midway in the receiver. Remington service suggested that I return the gun to Gander Mountain to see if they could fix it, and if not, to send it in for warranty work. The Gander staff were very helpful and were able assemble the gun after dropping the trigger assembley. I will continue to support Gander but I doubt that will buy another Remington.

Comments about Remington Model 870 Express Shotgun:

this is a great all around shotgun that will do the job of many. i used this gun for 3 years hunting everything to squirrel to ducks until i graduated to a 12 ga. i never had a problem with this gun it fed any load without a hick-up and never missed fired. it is a breeze to remove the barrel and clean. the only thing i wished it came with, was some sling mounts.

best all around gun for the price, not to big, not to small and it has Old Craftmanship in a new piece. it does well for what I want to teach gun safety to my grandson.

Comments about Remington Model 870 Express Shotgun:

on my 13th birthday i got the remington 870 in 20ga for shooting trap and hunting, i have become a better shot because of this gun. i have 3 other friends who have them to and they say the same thing i said, light weight, good mechanism, and accurate. the only thing that my friends find hard is putting the forearm slide. but once you do it once or twice its pretty easy.
