Comments about Patagonia Men's Drifter GORE-TEX Hiking Shoe:
Bought a pair of these shoes and took them out for a 4 day backpacking trip to the Smoky Mountains with a 35 pound pack. First, the good. These shoes kept my feet dry though all sorts of rain and mud. I used sno-seal on them before I left but the lining seemed to work well even when the laces got wet. They really shined on down hill hiking. The toe box is roomy and my toes never bumped the front of the she even on an 8 mile downhill day. The sole is a bit stiffer which makes these shoes a sort of hybrid between a shoe and a boot. Now the bad, these shoes have good traction on mud and loose surfaces but they are terrible on smooth wet surfaces like boulders and roots. I'm sure it's due to the combination of the stiff sole and a very aggressive lug pattern. I learned quickly to watch where I put my feet but the slippage was very annoying. Overall, these are good shoes. You can use them for backpacking but they are best as day hikers.
