Comments about Marlin® Model 336W Centerfire Rifle:
I bought mine over 20 years ago and still use it regularly. If you are looking to make shots in excess of 200 yds, this is not the gun for you. Where I hunt, 100 yd shots are few and far between. Most are 75 and under. I do prefer my shotgun because of this but I love the 30-30 on those rare occasions when I have a longer shot. It has brought down numerous deer and is a great brush gun. Its short barrel lends itself to easily walking through thick brush and across a marshy coastal area. It has been exposed to salt water environment and still looks great with no blemishes. It has been cared for but only the basics. This is a solid, no frills rifle that gets the job done. I use the scope mainly as a set of binoculars, when I shoot, I use the open sights in the see thru mounts I have as thats how I learned. You can't buy a better made gun and the price is unbeatable.

Comments about Marlin® Model 336W Centerfire Rifle:
What can you say bad about a Marlin 30-30? Nothing. Personally this was the first deer rifle I ever had. Dad bought me one from [...] when I was 12. I am now 25 and actually quit using it about 3 years ago mainly because my arms are just too long for it now. My older brother still uses his. I have killed 21 deer with the gun (yes I counted). The longest shot I made was a 198 yard shot accross a corn field. If you know how to shoot it you could kill a deer at 250 yards with a scope (I would suggest practice if you want to do that). The largest buck I ever killed, I killed with my 30-30 (140 class) with 170 grain winchester loads. The deer only ran about 50 yards. This is a great gun for a beginner or someone who doesn't have a lot of money for a deer rifle. Put a 3x9 scope on it and there is nothing deadlier.

Comments about Marlin® Model 336W Centerfire Rifle:
A great gun, tough as a two dollar steak. Spare parts are cheap enough to keep a few things on hand. A great bug out gun. 125 gr bullet great for home defense. 30-30 is a classic deer killer. Has taken millions of deer over the years and none of them knew it was not the latest and greatest magnum. There are no degrees of dead! Ammo is sold everywhere and is easy on the shoulder. What's not to love.

Q:
I was wondering if this rifle is a replica of the Winchester of the Civil War, and does it have the same durability as the 1864 Winchester?Asked on 5/17/2010 by Michael2 answers
A:
No. Marlin has its own independent history going back to 1870. They are very different from Winchesters in that the ejection port is on the side in Marlins and not on the top as in Winchesters. This allows for a receiver mounted scope (they come drilled and tapped). If you mean the 1894 Winchester (you must as the 1866 was the first Winchester), you'll find people arguing both ways and I don't really know how they compare. I'd bet any differences in durability wouldn't be noticed if you only had one.Answered on 5/26/2010 by Apuuli from Gainesville, FLA:
No. A replica would have a straight grip, and a crescent-shaped metal butt-plate, first off. But the only significant repeater lever-action during the Civil War that I know of was the Spencer Repeater. The design of this rifle is completely different and much more modernized and refined. Also, even though the .30-30 is the first ever rifle cartridge to be marketed for use with smokeless powder, it did not come around until 1895.Answered on 5/30/2010 by Iqentab from Alexandria, VA
