Designed and manufactured by Manufacture d'armes de Saint-…tienne, the MAS-49/56 was used extensively by the French Foreign Legion beginning around 1957. The rifle quickly earned a reputation for reliability in poor conditions and with minimal cleaning. A furthering of a design that originated with the MAS-1949, the 49/56 is a gas-operated tilting locking bolt semi-automatic rifle with a direct impingement gas system calibered for 7.5x54 French ammunition. The MAS direct impingement design reduces the number of bolt moving parts to only six and allows the entire bolt mechanism to be disassembled for cleaning in seconds. The MAS-1949/56 has shorter barrel and shorter handguards than the 1949, features that, along with special lightening cuts, save weight and make the weapon more maneuverable. The barrel is equipped with a combination muzzle brake and grenade launching device that includes special cannelure rings on the barrel to accommodate a spring-loading ring for proper grenade control. Two ventilation holes on the barrel aid in cooling. The 49/56's grenade launching sights are located on the barrel as well and flip up and down depending on function. This rifle features a trigger guard safety and an adjustable rear ramp sight with an adjustable pin front. The rifle has not been import-stamped. Its wood is in good condition and its metal and bore are in very good condition.
