Very effective pump for the price but read instructions and do not run dry. Doing so will over heat the pump very quickly.

Comments about Johnson Pumps Johnson Cartridge Bilge Pump - 1000 GPH Open Flow:
I had a bad experience on the lake on day and almost put my boat on the bottom due to my pump not working. I purchased this pump hoping that it would do a good enough job to keep the water out long enough to get me back to the bank if this happened again. When I received the new bilge pump, I was shocked at how small it was. I really didn't think that it would be able to do a very good job. After installing the new pump, I filled up the bilge with water from the hose. While the water was still filling the bilge, I turned on the pump. I was suprised that that the pump was almost pumping the water out as fast as the hose was putting it in. If I still have this boat when this pump goes out, I will be getting the same pump to replace it. It works great and doesn't cost an arm and a leg.

Comments about Johnson Pumps Johnson Cartridge Bilge Pump - 1000 GPH Open Flow:
Bought a second pump after the first one that I bought six years ago was no longer working. The first one was strong, reliable and did a great job of keeping the bilge dry. Turns out the first pump had a loose wire, works fine and has many years to spare. With the low price of the pump, it would cost me too much to ship the second one back. It's nice to know I have a quality spare that I may never need.

No...the Ultima series of bilge pumps are automatic. The Ultima 1000 (Item 33494) would be an option, as would the Rule RM1100 (Item 79810).Answered on 6/19/2009 by Matt from Overtons
