The Whitworth rifle was designed by Sir Joseph Whitworth, a prominent British engineer and entrepreneur, as a more accurate replacement of the popular 1853 Enfield. The Whitworth design utilizes twisted hexagonal barrel that keeps the bullet from biting into the grooves as often happened with traditional rifling. While the Whitworth was found to be much more accurate than the Enfield, it was rejected by the British government due to its higher manufacturing cost. Despite the cost, the Whitworth Rifle Company was able to sell their rifle to the French government and the Confederacy. This rifle features a Bushnell Trophy 3-9x40mm scope. Its wood, metal, and bore are all in good condition.
