Product DescriptionThe Whitworth rifle was designed by Sir Joseph Whitworth, a prominent British engineer and entrepreneur, as a more accurate replacement of the popular 1853 Enfield. The Whitworth design utilizes twisted hexagonal barrel that keeps the bullet from biting into the grooves as often happened with traditional rifling. While the Whitworth was found to be much more accurate than the Enfield, it was rejected by the British government due to its higher manufacturing cost. Despite the cost, the Whitworth Rifle Company was able to sell their rifle to the French government and the Confederacy. This rifle's butt-plate has been replaced by a LimbSaver recoil bad and it features a a set of Leupold-style scope-mounting bases and rings and a 2-position safety. Its wood, metal, and bore are all in good condition.
