Comments about Humminbird 597ci HD Fishfinder Chartplotter Combo:

I put this on the bow of my Triton bass boat, I needed the GPS capability, I also have 2 other Humminbird units on the boat. I have the 798ci SI on the dash and a 858c DI on a ram mount. Humminbird has always made very reliable and user friendly units, I would buy nothing else.

    good unit

Comments about Humminbird 597ci HD Fishfinder Chartplotter Combo:

I bought this unit a few months ago and got a chance to use it about 10 times. Before this, I had a basic $80 unit that was nothing fancy, so it was a definite upgrade from that. The reviews I read before purchasing it were relatively consistent with the unit. The things I didnt like about it:
-The speed does jump around a lot at low speeds... however, I troll enough to know the difference between 1mph and 1 1/2mph.
-When zooming in and out on the GPS map, it shows a blank screen for 3-5 seconds until it has a chance to load.

Other than that, everything else works well on it. I am getting an ice transducer to use it for ice fishing this year and hope this will save me some effort in drilling extra holes to find out exactly where I want to fish.

Comments about Humminbird 597ci HD Fishfinder Chartplotter Combo:

I decided to go with this unit since the Lakemaster chip had the most lakes that I fish in HD. Unfortunately, that doesn't matter since the gps is useless. My location will move around on the map. That's scary stuff in low visibility conditions Or even fishing a reef that comes up out of nowhere. I ruined a prop by navigating with this unit. It will leave many trails spaced far apart even when covering the same exact water. Can't use it for speed controll trolling since that jumps all over the place. My 18 year old hand held Eagle works great compared to this. Hummingbird didn't return emails when I explained that the product is faulty. On the phone they all stated that you have to go more than 2 mph for it to work correctly. They would not take it back, or offer any upgrade even though it was still under warranty. I would never buy a humminbird again with their no service warranty.

Comments about Humminbird 597ci HD Fishfinder Chartplotter Combo:

This has the worst GPS system that I have used or tested to date. In the bays and on most lakes you want to know exactly where you are and have the ability to easily label waypoints - this is 1990's technology and ease of use. I would not recommend this to anyone. GPS reception is poor and takes a long time to boot up. The interface between your computer and the device is horrible - a real nightmare to use.
