The overall construction design is good with a couple of faults. The bolts are metric stainless steel. The washers that retain the wheels were bent on my unit. These needed to be flattened in order to work. The dolly comes with a 1-7/8" ball that has a 3/4" shaft. You may buy a 2" replacement for this ball but be sure to get the 3/4" shaft.

The biggest design fault involves the handle attachement to the frame parts. Two bolts attach the hollow-shaft handle to this frame. The upper bolt goes through the thick skid and this helps to prevent the hollow handle shaft from crushing when tightening the nut. The lower bolt should be threaded through the lock washer and nut when these are located inside of the handle. This will lock the handle securely to the frame. Such nut may be securely tightened without any possibillity of crushing the handle. You may then add the usual nut and lockwasher to the outside of the handle but you will need to buy this nut and lockwasher separately. Remember, this is a stainless steel M10-1.5 bolt. Don't overtighten this nut and distort the handle. You could add another nut inside of the handle and behind this nut. This will eliminate the possibility of crushing the handle. I didn't find this necessary as the nut previously installed inside of the handle [above] will do the job. See attached drawing for details.

Otherwise this is a good dolly for the price with free shipping. The wheels are 12" and provide good traction.

The concept is appealing, but the execution leaves a lot to be desired. The ball location on the dolly is too low. It requires that you lower the boat jack every time you use it and then raise it again to connect to your vehicle. You have to be very careful not to get it over-center (handle too high). If you do, there is a real risk that the handle will flip up and the trailer tongue will fall to the floor. This happened to me. Make sure to leave your jack in the lowered position to catch the tongue in case this happens. Strongly built, just needs some modifications to be really useful.

Comments about Overton's Heavy-Duty Trailer Dolly:

First and foremost I was very dissapointed with this item. As I opened the box nuts and bolts fell out of tear in box. Searched for written instructions with parts package and none were to be found. After putting dolly together I was missing a bolt (obviously fell out in transit through hole in box). Tubing of dolly is not substantial and when tightening bolts one could easily collapse tubing if not careful. Washers needed to be added to bolts (not included) to prevent this. Bracket that holds ball is to short and does not provide much clearance when connecting ball to trailer coupler. Place air in tires and the next day when I went to use dolly one tire was flat. Placed air in tire and found it to be flat again the next day. For the money this is a very low quality piece of merchandise and money would have been better spent on a like dolly from Northern Tool.

    Service and delivery comments:

Box had tears in it and as I began to open box, bolts and nuts fell out onto the floor.

We had a new pad put in next to the house for our boat. There is about 6" on each side to get the boat in. Using this dolly, we easily manuvered the boat back onto the pad. If you are on an incline though, best have some extra help.

Pulling out to hook to the truck was extremely easy and the dolly allowed for very easy manuvering. Only one person required for flat or on a downward incline.

For the money, well worth the cost.

Comments about Overton's Heavy-Duty Trailer Dolly:

Use this dolly to transfer the boat into my garage. My driveway is complicated and this dolly helps me finish off the transition from vehicle to garage storage. I have a 20' Four Winns around 3,500 lb + 1,000 lb trailer. I would say I am putting this dolly to the max in terms of capability. Would be helpful to have a higher ball (1-2" higher) to transfer some weight off the dolly and back onto the trailer wheels.
