Comments about H&R 1871 Inc H&R® Pardner® Pump Synthetic Shotgun:

I was looking for an 18.5" pump for home defense and was leaning towards the Maverick 88 until I looked over the Pardner. I liked the extra weight. Cycles like a champ and doesn't feel quite as janky as the Mav did. After putting a few boxes through it, I'm convinced I made the right decision. I'll put a tac light on it and I'll be ready to go.

Comments about H&R 1871 Inc H&R® Pardner® Pump Synthetic Shotgun:

This is a terrific shotgun at a terrific price/value. It's a Remington 870 clone, made in China, but the manufacturer was just recently bought by Remington. Don't let that sway you. It's heavy duty and built like a tank. Almost all Remington 870 accessories fit it. Law enforcement guys love it, ex Military guys love it. Barrel is heavier made than original Rem 870. I put a BlackHawk recoil absorbing tactical pistol grip stock, BlackHawk PowerPak cheek pad and shell carrier, scope rail and a reflex sight. This shotgun is pre-drilled for rail/scope. Took it to the range and wow.. super nice weapon for half the price of a Remington. Action was smooth, ate my targets up. Buy it while you still can!

Comments about H&R 1871 Inc H&R® Pardner® Pump Synthetic Shotgun:

I have used pump action shotguns in the past (mostly Rem. 870), but this is the first one I've owned. I bought it for home protection and maybe some occasional clay shooting. I wanted something well built and reliable, and thus far, the gun seems to be. The fit and finish could be better, but I don't care about that because I wasn't looking for something pretty, just something that works. I haven't shot the gun yet but I've cleaned it and cycled hundreds of snap cap rounds through it. Side note: as the snap caps experienced a little wear, double feeds became common, but I think this is a problem with A-Zoom, not H&R. For the price, you can't beat it if all you're looking for is a simple, well built pump action.

What is the best type of ammo for this gun in a home defense situation?
Asked on 3/7/2010 by Anonymous from ny

            1 answer

            • A:

I recommend #1 Buckshot or 00 Buckshot. I find #1 Buck patterns better than 00 Buck, but at typical home defense range I think patterns aren't a major issue. I like #1 in the house because it should penetrate fewer walls.
