Comments about H&R 1871 Inc H&R Handi-Rifle Centerfire Rifle:

Most gun enthusiasts believe that (1) The most accurate rifles are bolt actions, and (2) a break open action is only good for shotguns, But then the H&R Handi-Rifle came along. I've been reading blogs and reviews for the last year that rave about how accurate the Handi-Rifle is, and what an incredible value it is. Even better, you can send your rifle back to H&R and they'll fit any other Handi-Rifle barrel to it for less than half the cost of a new gun! Everything from .22 Hornet to ..500 S&W is available, including all the standard handgun cartridges and shotgun gauges. Tis is truly the rifle for the man (or woman) who wants one gun to do everything.

I chose .357 Magnum for my first Handi based on feedback from a lot of shooters who said it was their favorite, and because I thought it would make a good companion to my Blackhawk in the same caliber. I fit a 2.5x BSA "Deer Hunter" scope to it, which is a good choice for a gun that is intended, in this caliber, at least, for ranges not much more than 50'yards.

It is indeed and accurate gun, and the metal in the chamber is so thick that it can easily handle any factory .357 load; so e shooters seat the bullet farther out, and use .357 Maximum loading with no signs of excess pressure. Some ream the chamber out to Maximum specs.

There is one small flaw in the way H&R made this gun: They used the SAMI chamber spec, which is intended for revolvers, and hence there's a completely unnecessary forcing cone in he barrel. This can cause problems in hot loads with lead bullets, and result in more blowby (I am told) and a loss of accuracy in some instances. I've had some accuracy problems wilth he classic Elmer Keith .357 lead bullet load using 2400. I've had no problems with factory loads, low power lead loads, and jacketed bullet loads, though.

Overall, though, this is a great gun, a real bargain in today's market, and the core of an all-around shooting system if you care to go that route. I'm very happy with mine.
