First off let me start off my review by saying that there is only 2 reasons why this is not a 5 star product but the main reason for buying this product the grinding is a 5+++! I bought this product for my husband knowing that he as a hunter will get plenty of use out of this item! I was told by others to go with a smaller one, but being as it was a special price black friday item, it was a must buy. Knowing how much processing of bear or deer meat costs @ local meat markets and the fact that they mix everyones meat together and prepare your sausage or hamburger with their own speciality seasoning mix, this is well worth the price as in 2 yrs time or less it will pay for itself with processing fees alone especially if you are an avid hunter as well as the fact that it is your own meat and can choose which seasoning you will put in it ie: people with food allergies to certain seasoning. Heck its a must buy if you have the money at regular price. Secretly I also wanted it for myself as I whip up a mean sarma (ethnic delicacy) I would in order to have my special grind mixture (pork/hamburger/pit ham) made up @ a meat market order such a mass amount of it! Now that we have this and have ran 2 deer through it I know it will work wonderfully for the smaller jobs. I cannot overemphasize how much we love the stainless steel design/ easy set up and clean up/ and the fact that it is not too noisy! What was nice was the fact that you dont have to cube the meat small. The 2 downfalls I found was that of course not that you would even use the pan but it was very small. We plugged it in onto the countertop @ first and placed a large stainless steel bowl into the sink to catch the grind. Being as I didnt have the money to buy the large meat mixer we used a big storage bin to mix our hamburger and venisin and cure with ice chunked water! The cure had large chunks of garlic in it but everything still went through it no problem. The 2nd downfall was the smallest size sausage stuffer we wanted to use for jerky sticks didnt work quite well even with very cold meat that sat in container outside in 0 temp weather and snow! But the meduim sized one worked awesome for making polish/bratwursts! Cant wait to use the largest sized stuffer I am convinced that it will work amazingly. I know we have only had this item for 2 weeks but I beleive it was a great investment and will work for years to come. Dont even know why they would have a reverse switch listed being as it goes through without problems and grinds as fast as you can feed it (which is pretty fast) Small or big jobs don't matter I would fully recommend this to anyone hunter or not as I beleive it could do just about any job you wanted it too! Satisfied buyer!!! And looking forward to many years of enjoyment to come of any project big or small.

I have made homemade pork sausage for many years. This product is excellent at grinding; a big time saver. I am not satisfied with using it for stuffing. The sausage plate does not hold the auger tightly in place. Seems like it needs an additional spacer to take up the slack. Sausage goes between the grinder head and the motor and this makes clean up more difficult. I have gone back to Gander Mountain and the employees were helpful, but all the grinders had the same play in them.
P. S. It should not add much to the price for a good handle.

Comments about Guide Series #12 Stainless Steel Electric Meat Grinder:

We bought this grinder to make our own polish sausage, it grinds wonderful, but for some reason stuffing sausage is a total workout, it will not feed into the stuffing tube easily without physically pushing the meat down-any siggestions?

We bought this grinder specifically to process our own deer. It works perfect. We make deer jerky and it was so easy with this grinder. Yes, it is important to read the instructions and clean it well after use, but it makes the process a snap.

LEM is THE grinder manufacturer. Every decent grinder in US is made at LEM in Ohio. The cheap plastic ones on line are likely Chinese. I expect that GM contracted this grinder at LEM just like everyone else does. Parts are interchangeable with LEM. Go to LEM.com and you will see what I mean.

P.S. I love this grinder - fast, easy, quiet.

This is NOT a LEM grinder. It is made by Intradin Products in China. LEM grinders are NOT made in the USA either, although their website leads one to believe that. LEM is "based" in Harrison Ohio, but the grinders and other products are not made there.

I am having a difficult time making sausage with this machine. I have to put a lot of pressure on the stomper to get the meat to come out of the casing tubes. I did put some water in the meat and the meat was cold but it does not appear to be working correctly. I have used other lager machines and the sausage came out at a rapid pace. The meat grinding went extremely well. Need help

My grinder does not run hot, but I have the same problem with meat getting behind the auger. I just wrote a review with Gander Mountain about this problem. None of the other reviews mentioned this problem. Hope to get a reply from them.

I do not have this particular grinder but in my experience I have found that if you have meat in-between the drop chute and bearing then you probably added the meat to fast and had to use the stomper. If you exert a lot of pressure on the stomper this forces the meat the wrong direction towards the bearing. Also, try to never use reverse. If you need to use reverse then something is wrong. There may be ligaments and other stuff you don’t want to eat wrapped around the cutter. Stop and clean the cutter blade occasionally. One of the signs of a clogged cutter is that the meat will look “mushy” when coming out of the grinder. I’ve ground a lot of deer meat with pork in it and have found that the best thing to do is to clean all of that garbage from the meat before grinding. This will make the grinding job a lot easier. With experience you will figure it out. I’ve gone through the same problems.

                  Same here!

After grinding about 15 pounds of Boston butt in a few minutes with no problem at all, I was actually impressed with the performance, the housing of the unit felt really "warm". It did not shut down though. It felt like it was still heating up AFTER the job was done and the unit was unplugged.

And yes, the meat was getting behind the auger, up against the rubber oil seal, which I thought is no such a big deal like the housing getting heated up.

I am wondering what the "working temperature" should be??

It does not have reverse. If your meat chunks are small enough to fit in the throat you won't need reverse. Not sure about the tenderizer from GM. LEM has one that should fit.
