I bought two of these to use canoe camping in the Adirondacks. Though they are not super light, I don't care because getting a good nights sleep is more important to me. I end up puffing a few breaths into the mattress to help it get inflated. Fully inflated, it is pretty firm, so I found that if I lay on it with my head at the valve end, I can reach up and crack the valve to let just enough air out to get to the perfect comfort level. As others have noted, you can sleep on your side without hitting the ground, these things are VERY comfortable. An issue was our sleeping bags with slippery nylon fabric tend to slide off (especially since I toss and turn a lot). I found some 6' x 20" rolls of that rubbery no-slip shelf lining material at[@] in the housewares area that is exactly the right size to put on top of the mattress, this prevents the sleeping bag from slipping. When I'm closing up the mattress I roll the no-slip inside the mattress, it doesn't really add anything to the packed size.To close these up, open the valve, fold the mattress in half, and lay on it to force the air out. When no more air is leaving, fold it in quarters and kneel on it. When you get as much air out as you can this way, close the valve and lay the mattress out flat. Lay the no-slip on it and roll it up from the bottom. When you get about 3/4 of the way up, you can open up the valve again to get the rest of the air out. This is a lot easier than just opening the valve and rolling it up when it's full of air.

I have owned a "guide gear" version of this mat for a few years and liked it when car camping. When Christmas rolled around this last year, I looked for one for my fiancee but couldn't find one anywhere~ So I bought one of these versions instead. I prefer the guide gear version. It's wider and has full thickness all the way to the edge. The Gander Mtn version seems to have a slight oval or football profile to it. The sides only seem to be 2 inches wide with only the middle being the full advertised thickness. The quality seems very good and I like that it has a brass twist valve instead of plastic but my guide gear still seems to be much more comfortable, and [$] cheaper. I would recommend this if you can't find a guide gear 4" model.

Comments about Gander Mountain Self-Inflating 4.0 Camping Pad:

My old 2" mat was nothing compared to this one! It was extremely comfortable. The extra height on the mat meant I could lay anywhere, even on roots and not feel them. While everyone else was cold on the 41 degree night, I was cozy. I can't wait to try it out in warm weather to see if it works as well under those conditions.

Great Sleeping pad. Impressed with the brass valves used on the pad, seem very durable. Inflate easy and the comfort is amazing. Keeps you warm on the ground unlike an air matress. Easy to pack and does not take up too much room.

Comments about Gander Mountain Self-Inflating 4.0 Camping Pad:

After trying the classic air mattress with car camping...and quickly getting annoyed with it deflating and getting holes...my husband and I began our search for the most comfortable sleeping pad at the best price. This one is it! Not only does it self-inflate, it is also adjustable to personal preference by adding or reducing the amount of air inside. It is very comfortable! I let it self-inflate completely then push a little bit of the air out as I prefer it to conform more to my back. I slept very well and had plenty of energy the next day for lots of boating and swimming. My only complaint is that it is rather bulky, so it probably wouldn't work very well for backpacking, but if you're an occasional backpacker and usually car camp like myself, then I'm sure that you will be very pleased with this pad!
