For the money it has worked well, just trim your meat of fat and silver skin and keep it smaller than the shoot diameter, also let the grinder pull the meat in as opposed to forcing the meat into the grinder (use the plunger to clear the shoot not to force product in). Remember its not a professional grade grinder but if you use common sense it will pay for itself (related to processing fees) in no time. 1st grind with the wedge shape blade then use the middle size grind blade, colder the meat the better but not frozen.
Do not grind more than 1 average deer at a time (could over heat motor), if you grind in a colder climate both the meat and the grinder will remain cooler longer-- just like a slaughter house does, heat is your enemy.

I bought this product to do very small scale sausage making. I do not hunt often and have meat processed if I do. So this was meant for the occasional 5 pound roast. I bought 5.5 pound of (pre ground) Boston butt thinking that would shave time on the front end. After seasoning was added I want to use the fine plate to make a very pasty andouille sausage. It became clogged instantly. So I went to the coarsest plate I could. It ground for a little while but had to be cleaned several times before the 5 pounds was done. I then went to stuffing the casing. Again it had to be cleaned several time before the process was complete. It does not appear that the metal parts are dishwasher safe (as they seemed to turn blackish, and some rusted) but I would not know seeing how little was in the manual.
It also put off a strong smell of machine oil which I thought was due to newness (we will see) also where the neck screws to the body it is held by one screw and appears to be plastic on metal. This looks like a good place for future breakage as you must put pressure on this joint when grinding.
I say if you are serious save your money and get something better.

Comments about Gander Mountain #5 Electric Meat Grinder:
Bought this to make sausage and it worked well! Blade dulled after about 100 lbs.
Not angry but if expecting more buy extra blade or go bigger. The grinder handles the meat but if grinding pork you have to clean the blade and plates off every ten pounds when grinding. You would be better off buying a stuffer than depending on this it is very hard to fill the casings. If you are only doing 20 lbs or less buy it, any more consider an upgrade.

Comments about Gander Mountain #5 Electric Meat Grinder:
My husband and I purchased after reading many reviews. I'm glad we did! We haven't used but a few times on venison but worked great. I found after reading comments to grind meat partially frozen seems to work best if meat has any of the white skin like covering left on it. Otherwise it grinds fine but don't force the meat to fast or doesn't do too well. Also cutting in about 1 inch strips work great too. Overall glad with purchase, ready for deer season to come in again so we can try whole deer!
