For the money it has worked well, just trim your meat of fat and silver skin and keep it smaller than the shoot diameter, also let the grinder pull the meat in as opposed to forcing the meat into the grinder (use the plunger to clear the shoot not to force product in). Remember its not a professional grade grinder but if you use common sense it will pay for itself (related to processing fees) in no time. 1st grind with the wedge shape blade then use the middle size grind blade, colder the meat the better but not frozen.
Do not grind more than 1 average deer at a time (could over heat motor), if you grind in a colder climate both the meat and the grinder will remain cooler longer-- just like a slaughter house does, heat is your enemy.

I bought this product to do very small scale sausage making. I do not hunt often and have meat processed if I do. So this was meant for the occasional 5 pound roast. I bought 5.5 pound of (pre ground) Boston butt thinking that would shave time on the front end. After seasoning was added I want to use the fine plate to make a very pasty andouille sausage. It became clogged instantly. So I went to the coarsest plate I could. It ground for a little while but had to be cleaned several times before the 5 pounds was done. I then went to stuffing the casing. Again it had to be cleaned several time before the process was complete. It does not appear that the metal parts are dishwasher safe (as they seemed to turn blackish, and some rusted) but I would not know seeing how little was in the manual.
It also put off a strong smell of machine oil which I thought was due to newness (we will see) also where the neck screws to the body it is held by one screw and appears to be plastic on metal. This looks like a good place for future breakage as you must put pressure on this joint when grinding.

I say if you are serious save your money and get something better.

Comments about Gander Mountain #5 Electric Meat Grinder:

I bought this model about 7 years ago. I am assuming it is still made the same way. Its been a workhorse. I think I've put about 15 deer through it, and maybe 60 pounds of pork that I made in to sausage. I can't believe its still going. I got this one after I blew the gears out on some retail one I bought in like 2 uses. I've bogged this down so many times but it just pushes through it and keeps going. I'm on here looking for a replacement blade as my dad managed to lose mine. I'd buy the next size bigger because I put enough use on it, but this is perfect for a couple of deer a year.

Comments about Gander Mountain #5 Electric Meat Grinder:

This grinder, albeit inexpensive, powered through at least 30lb of venison with no problem whatsoever. Very easy to take apart and clean, which is great. Has 3 plates for coarse, medium, and fine, as well as being able to stuff sausage. I was very pleasantly surprised at how well this product worked and would not hesitate to recommend it. Just read the directions and make sure the auger & tray are engaged properly. A great product for the price. Glad I bought it.

I use this product to make sausage from wild pigs and to also grind up venison for burger meat. I thought this product was a great buy and have been very happy with it. It can sometimes get a little bogged down with large cubes of meat. For the recreational hunter it is the perfect size.

Comments about Gander Mountain #5 Electric Meat Grinder:

I purchased this grinder several years ago and use it every year to process 3-4 deer in the fall and one hog in the spring. While it is not the fastest it has never failed to do the job when used properly. I spray the inside parts with non stick spray before every use and if I'm processing a lot of meat I rinse and spray in the middle of the job also. This helps.

About six times a year we buy a whole boneless pork loin and about 10 pounds of beef at the same time. Grind, package and freeze. This machine is an absolute breeze to use and clean up (not in the dishwasher, please). We make sure all parts are completely dry (in a 200 degree oven) and store cutters and blades in zip-lock bag with a little veg. oil. . No complaints at all.
