Cons

    Best Uses

Comments about DeLorme inReach Explorer Satellite Communicator:

This was a great device for communicating with home and the office from a remote safari camp in Africa. I could send a message and my wife or office staff could pull up a satelite view of my location as well as exchange messages. I used it on and off for about a week and a half and never had to recharge the battery.

      • Travel Outside Cell Servi

Comments about DeLorme inReach Explorer Satellite Communicator:

If you are on a multiday trip outside of cell service, this device will connect you to the outside world letting folks know in real time where you are, allow basic communication, and give you proximity and compass heading to way points. it will not allow easy texting using a qwerty keyboard or positioning on a topo map unless you have a tablet with you paired with the Explorer. The major downside of this is now you have two batteries to keep charged, and the tablet by comparison is an electricity pig. Because the battery in the Explorer is rechargeable, now you also have to pack a means of recharging it, however this may be a necessary evil to maintain waterproofness of the device. also keep in mind that you also have to have a service plan just like a data plan for other devices which ranges from 12 to 65 per month depending on amount and type of service. The ability to contact help in an emergency though, plus its gps and texting functions makes this device all worth while.
