Product Description
browning The Browning 10-Shot Double Helix T-Bolt Magazine is easy to load, easy to carry and easy to use. The magazine features a torsion drive spring and interlocking gears to maintain proper timing and exact cartridge alignment for smooth, reliable feeding. The spring-assisted drop-free ejection feature allows for rapid magazine changes, while the smooth, rounded contours of the double helix with twin gripping grooves, tapered shape and slightly extended baseplate make insertion positive. A gray translucent body allows you to identify remaining cartridges easily. Ammunition can be removed by moving the exposed gear back slightly to drop each cartridge without using tools or scraping your fingers.

The "Double Helix" magazine for the new Browning T-Bolt rifle has a few good points. It doesn't protrude from the bottom of the stock. It is relatively narrow. Rounds feed reliably from it. But it is a pain in the thumb to use, so much so that it seriously interferes with one's use and enjoyment of the rifle. Loading cartridges into the Double Helix requires that you rotate a little toothed plastic wheel with your thumb, about half a turn per round, against the pressure of a spring. Well, the little wheel is too narrow, and it digs painfully into the ball of your thumb when you apply enough pressure to turn it. I'm no wimp, but I found that after loading five rounds my thumb was too sore to continue. So I would load five rounds, shoot them, load another five, shoot them and so forth. After shooting about 100 rounds on my first afternoon with the T-Bolt, my thumbs -- I tried both -- were too sore to continue and I gave it up as a bad job. Thoughtless design faults like that irritate me and take all the pleasure out of owning a new rifle. Why didn't they test the magazine before loosing it on an unsuspecting public? If I, a burly gent of sixty-seven summers, can't operate the thing without pain, how could a woman or a child? Browning should supply a simple, all-metal, single-stack magazine like the ones that came with the earlier version of the T-Bolt. The new T-Bolt is a pretty decent rifle for the money, but Browning has gummed it up with too much "innovation" from the magazine department. I called Browning's customer service this morning and calmly described the problem. They offered to send me a replacement mag without being asked. I wondered if they had redesigned the mag with a wider wheel or a softer spring, and was told they had not. It was nice of them to send me a free mag -- the little suckers list for about $50 -- but I presume it will be just as painful to operate as the original. We'll see. Tomorrow I am meeting with the manager of the store at which I bought the T-Bolt -- and a $160 scope for it -- in hopes that he will let me return the whole shooting match and refund my money, which I will promptly apply to the purchase of a Weatherby XXII. Wish me luck. My advice is: Before you buy a T-Bolt, try loading all ten rounds into the Double Helix, not just once, but about ten times in a row. If your thumb doesn't hurt, you're a tougher man than I, or have a numb thumb. P.S. "The Double Helix" is the name of a book written by the English scientists Watson and Crick, and refers to the convoluted shape of the DNA molecule, which they discovered. I wonder if they copyrighted the term?

.22 Skidoo, load the T-bolt mag like any other. Simply push the rounds into the mag, no need to roll the wheel at all.

The wheel is for ease of UNloading the magazine.
