I purchased this product for my son because I wanted him to learn to create fire without matches, lighters, etc. It was almost too easy. As long as you have reasonably dry tinder and fluff it well, this sparker will ignite it. I will be purchasing a few more of these.

Comments about Swedish FireSteel Scout Firestarter:
I teach Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts how to build fires and winter survival. I use this tool as the primary sparking tool for boys from 2nd grade through high school. As others say, tinder is the key. Char cloth is nice but not required. The spark this tool throws is hot enough that it works just as well with dryer lint, frayed twine, cattail fluff, alcohol wipes (or purell and a bit of t-shirt), or my personal favorite, vasoline worked into a cotton ball. One spark from the firesteel and if you have your fire planned right, you're cooking in no time.
If anyone has problems with this tool, they are doing 1 or 2 things, they have the metal piece upside down, not leaning forward or are not pushing the pieces together hard enough. But remember that 2nd graders do this every year for me so it's not that difficult to use.

Comments about Swedish FireSteel Scout Firestarter:
Great product. Leave it to the Swedish folk to design such a simple, quality and useful product. It has saved me on a number of occasions from spending a cold night in the bush. So long as you can find very dry tinder (sometimes you have to be imaginative) it will work like a charm.
